I don't know if anyone has ever told you this but you make some really thought-provoking and informative posts. I always enjoy reading what you have to say, a lot of it changes my prespective on certain things. You make high-effort posts that are educational without being condescending. A lot of times I don't really understand what you're talking about because I'm not knowledgeable, but I don't feel dumb when I'm reading your posts - a lot of times I'm able to learn. They say that talking to a smart person makes you feel dumb, but talking to a really smart person makes you feel smart. Thank you for helping me to learn. You're cool rd 😎

//edit: geez how embarrassing. i'm okay now. realistically i know i'm already well loved but i start feeling majorly pathetic as soon as i don't have full modding steam because The Neurochemistry Requires Engagement
in a state of having enough awareness to realize im meltdownposting but in a bad enough state to meltdownpost anyway. feeling like a massive imposter but not the funny sussy amogus kind. all i can do is make janked up frankensprites that never get finished because too many sprites at once and i dont have the attention span to make them even remotely consistent. how do some people crank out entire new things from scratch? how the fuck? i feel like a massive hack fraud calling myself a modder when i never even finish anything. i'm 90% of assets and 100% of maps away from making shatterdawn releasable and i cant even share the work ive done for it so far. and heliotrope: serpent's wake was intended to be a fun romp through pseudo wolf3d geometry to try to avoid the map issue but is stuck at me not knowing enough about animation and anything really. i want to make things!!!! but its so fucking overwhelming!!!!! and ive come to the realization that i really dont enjoy making maps in the first place because aside from the massive hassle of not running into mappers block 1 room in i just vastly prefer playing something i didnt make myself so i cant even follow the usual "make something you enjoy" thing. and everyday i log onto doomworld and am faced with a towering bastion of exquisitely crafted wads where every map is something nice and fun and new yet i open udb and it always ends up so soul crushingly exhausting to even try to think of a combat setpiece i didn't already make in the few maps ive already made before and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa please i just want to be loved and my works enjoyed but i have no works to be enjoyed and even outside of doom i get overwhelmed and never finish 99% of artwork and i screech into the void about this exact thing approximately once a week yet the loop never breaks the ouroboros never releases me from its death coils the torment never stops

interesting avatar...
i see... this prof pic is a clever ruse to goad me into creating the gene therapy company i always wanted and turn everyone fluffy, isn't it. i see through your plans and will not bite! i'm only a day in since my dry period, so you can't take the best of me.
*breathes in heavily and meditates:* do not pet the rd. do not pet teh rd. do not pet the rd.....
really cute avatar, i hate it.

Do you consider "low-effort" or "lazy" maps worth creating?
Over the years I seem to have developed an aversion to making things that I don't consider to be good, whatever that may mean. It could be that it the work has genuine design issues that I cannot seem to solve, the work feeling lazy and rehashed, or that I simply do not like the results for more nebulous and intangible reasons. I feel terrible about having seemingly "wasted" my time, having only become more acutely aware of how limited it is in recent times. This has progressed to the point of considering giving up the practice of mapping entirely several times now, and I am yet again at that point, perhaps closer than ever before. I'm not sure what to do.
A change in thought process is absolutely needed, but that is much easier said than done. Something I've deliberately avoided for a long time now is "tiny, forgettable, disposable maps made primarily for the sake of making something". Maps that don't really have much time or thought put into them, but still may provide some amount of enjoyment. If I don't put my all into a map and make it the best I feel it can be, I have a hard time feeling like the result is worth much of anything, but maybe this isn't the case? How much value do people see in tiny three minute maps that they may blast through once and never think about again? Or are they meant as more of an exercise for a creator to release some pressure? I don't know. All I do know is that the way I'm currently trying to approach things is not working.
-
I thought about this just yesterday. One thought is that tiny low-effort maps do not have to be forgettable and disposable. You (general you) probably don't know how to approach making speedmaps if you're seeing those as inevitably linked. Think less making a regular map -- just one that happens to be small and lo-fi -- and more leaning into one or two more specific ideas at a compact scale. They can even be good!
An analogy is writing. Is it only worth writing longform articles and books that take weeks and months and years? Or can you transmit something very worthwhile in posts and pieces that you took 30 minutes to write? (Note that 30 minutes would represent a "high-effort forum post" for some people. From another perspective that is a tiny amount of effort -- yet you also don't have to look hard to find pieces of writing that took someone 30 minutes and was really valuable to readers.) It's really odd imo that Doom level design discourse tends to lack a space for "serious" sub-2-hour maps. Typically work at that scale is treated as a casual diversion from the "real" work of longform mapping. One argument about the difference might be that mapping, compared to writing, "needs" a certain amount of labor associated with texture application and detailing and related work that takes time -- but that is bullshit, maps do not need that.
Empirically, I have played 5-minute speedmaps that are "better" in an unqualified sense than some maps that took weeks. So...

I have a problem with mapping, I get bursts, ideas and I guess I start executing them, then go like, what now
-
Take a few days or more off and wait for an idea to come to you. Most of the maps I've been happiest with have been made quickly in terms of hours spent mapping, but have had at least one unnecessary break (not spent mapping) where I waited for ideas to come to me. Or where I sort of shelved the project and got an idea that reanimated it. Beats forcing it.
I've come to feel that long periods of creative incubation are underrated. A lot of people think they have given up on a project if they haven't made something for a few weeks, but sometimes that's really helpful. Also this is why I've shifted to working on multiple maps at once rather than just one.
Another "trick" though is that the next idea does not have to be directly connected to the existing map. Like you can just think of some area the player will eventually get to. This is useful because it creates a lot more options.

like: fnord's name since im an illuminatus! trilogy doofus
don't like: all their kickings of ancient wads on the front page. lol. what do you win when you downvote someone's stuff exactly -
once again, i have deluded myself into using the 1970's mainframe, while loosely bolting many things on to it. dead/dying ssd=Bye Bye to the candy crush spyware.
Spoilerit's a 2.5 ghz processor, for some reason neofetch doesn't seem to get that right, both here and on slackware/manjaro live media. yet the bios and kde preferences do.
probably going to move to slackware eventually for Bob's sake but I Gotta try reactOS on the t60 first. i have been wanting to install arch for at least a decade at this point, never had the space/been far too complacent with candy crush spyware. not the case anymore, This Year Is My Year Of The Linux Desktop, i would much rather use the computer, than have the computer use Me. -
Had enough of this cesspool ran by little ego-bloated tyrants, whose only worry is to hold a stranglehold on their little personal playground they call a 'community'. From now on I'll be releasing maps elsewhere.
If you need me for anything Doom related you can find me on Discord. Have fun!

Doom trends that need to go: roster and weaponry bloat.
The IWAD bestiary and arsenal are sufficient and fine.

Thelokk at some point you have to recognize not everything can be for you. You make a zillion 'posts' of this nature. It's as if you expect or hope the whole community output to just be your thing exclusively, while ignoring/misperceiving the diversity in everything that is not for you.
It's a pretty annoying type of posting that some people engage in. The underlying pattern is: "the niches I like are special and creative and diverse -- and everyone else is doing the same thing / following 'trends'."
But the amusing thing about that is that everyone who does that, no matter where they are situated, feels like they are the "niche" that is special and creative and that everything else is just cookie cutter. For example: there are some niche slaughter fans who'd get upset that 90% of wads only care about visuals and don't care about gameplay and are too easy. And then meanwhile there are some people who get upset that 90% of wads are difficulty-obsessed slaughter. Which obvious implodes via contradiction.
Everyone who does that is falling prey to the same fallacy that of the 150+ higher-effort or semi-notable or whatever releases a year, they should be capable of really enjoying like 100 of them. When in reality, unless you are a flexible player, it'll be closer to 10-30 and that is unavoidable.
I've seen nothing different in your posts in that regard -- it's the exact same pattern as all the other people who have ever done this.

why are there so many meta-posters who go into a thread and tell you why yr thread isn't a good idea? just go back in yr cave, your commentary is worthless <3

Should have used the search function someone said the exact same thing. ;) ;)

So, I've been feeling under the weather for the past couple of days. This is the worst head-cold I've experienced in years. At first, I thought it was essentially what I'd experience getting COVID-19 after being fully-vaxxed but I tested myself and the result was negative. It's just one nasty cold that has sapped me of sleep and energy in general. I'm hoping that I'm over the worst of it now and will be right as rain in the next couple of days. That said, I lack the mental fortitude to battle demons, so I'm going to be out of commission when it comes to playtesting for a while. The next time you see me posting a video, you'll know I've recovered.

Sick of a certain member who has a habit of starting political arguments in every other thread they post in, making posts to tell everyone about how they don't care about the topic at hand, double/triple posting, bumping threads months after no activity, telling others that their opinions don't count, being too lazy to use Google, and flooding every thread they post in with every brain fart worth of thoughts they can summon. Said user makes many posts so they are unavoidable, and is an active disruption to civil conversation. I hope someone will eventually discourage them from this kind of behavior.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have officially been part of the Doom community for ten years! :D
No, I'm not doing a mapping contest, I'm a student and I need all my money for pies.

Since this is rounding out closer to completion, I'll announce here that I'm maintaining a summary of wads that came out this year (or close enough), so that lots of stuff can be found and downloaded in one convenient place.
I've been focusing more on tracking down obscure smaller releases lately. If you want to help contribute, though, five wads (or series) need suitable screenshots in 4:3.
Those are the DBP series (gonna be 15 total shots, so 1 for each wad out so far and pick 1-2 more), HFFM - Cut (5 total), The Unmaking (6 total, if you have Doom 64 EX), Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl Reloaded (5 total), and Blade of Agony (6 total).
(Screenshots for the PUSS series are on the way from the project organizer, so don't worry about those.)
-
@Horus I hadn't looked yet (as I mentioned in the description I'll have to be slower with single maps) but now that you ask, yeah it's not 4:3 either. I can easily retake those though if I add it

I have 110 status updates. the most ever on Doomworld was 300. the user is banned. I'm 3 updates away from beating @Tracer, who is also banned. I'm scared that if I keep posting these updates, I might get banned. lol

I think I'm going to shove all my doom projects onto the back burner until I can comfortably continue them because I've been worrying myself physically ill that I'll never complete them
like I'm litteraly in my bed rn my stomach hurts so bad
so I might make Midis and stuff still but my personal projects like the youtube video and wad will be sucking a hole in my USB until then.
thankies

Finished combat shock 2 today, got vanguard vibes from the first 2 maps, Speed of Doom for the third, Sunder vibes for the next 2, Scythe 2 for map06, and the bonus map reinforced the vanguard influence. Really fun stuff, if not wholly original, then again, what wad isn't derivative in some way.
-
04-05 are more Sunder (especially The Furnace) + 06 is I think New Gothic Movement. yeah I really liked CS2

Wonder if there's any way to contact the moderation team? I'd just want to know which posts were counted as 'shitposting' to stop doing that, as i currently have no idea.
-
I'm not the mod who warned you, but a good rule of thumb is that reaction gifs, reaction videos, lazy memes, irrelevant non-sequiturs, off-topic copypastas -- and things like that -- are going to be likely for that warning. You had a four-second video that was basically a reaction gif.
By coincidence, shitposting is the one warning I ever got (in 2017)
and I still think it was wrong lol. As long as you don't start to rack up tons of them, you should be fine.A good way to avoid it is to try to make sure most of your posts have some substance to them, which doesn't mean they have to be long, but just that you don't want to post like it's Twitter with a lot of impulsive/short posts.
