Doom 2 the Way id Did

Despite that mimicking the style of Michael Bukowski (the Xbox Doom II Map33 guy), American McGee, John Romero and Sandy Petersen (especially Petersen and Romero) was done well here, most of its maps are not as memorable as Doom II's or D1TWID's. Most of the memorable moments in this megawad came from the least favourable maps, like Crushed Spirits, Abyss and The Mortal Coil for example. I guess it captures the annoying parts of Doom II perfectly? Which is why I think it deserves 4 stars rather than 3 (also, there are some big names here, and Tarnsman is there who made most of the maps in this megawad). I think this megawad has one of my favourite two secret maps, I kinda wished Map31 had less confusing progression, and no, I didn't finish Map33 :/

    SEWERS.ZIP

One of the two levels that is featured as an easter egg in the Doom 3 Collector's Edition (and Resurrection of Evil) Xbox port. The map is from 1994 and it is typical of its era, although it's not as terrible as its Doom 2 counterpart, Betray. At the very least there is kind of an attempt for effort in this map and there is a bit to explore, although it's rather confusing and the map is still pretty ugly to look at. At best it's passable but that still doesn't make this any good.

    Sewers Remake

A remake of sewers.wad by David Calvin. The text file claims that this is a "vanilla remake" but at the same time ZDoom is required...? Odd. Playing in Zdoom 2.8.1, I've noticed a few graphical glitches such as a HOM outside of one of the windows, but nothing game-breaking. I've only taken a quick look at the original (which some may know from its inclusion in Xbox Doom) and this remake seems to be almost completely different, although a few areas have preserved their basic concept. As the title suggests it's a trip through some dark, acid-filled tunnels, with difficulty about on par with E1 although the fights at the end get intense. Health is quite scarce but with enough skill you shouldn't have problems. Annoyingly, other than the shotgun there are no other weapons out in the open; I guess the rest are hidden in secrets judging from all the ammo lying around. The visuals are about on par with the original IWAD, although with a lot of "DoomCute" stuff (to borrow kmxexii's term) such as vending machines, as well as areas which have no real gameplay roles, and details such as holes in doors. Overall there is some strong sense of place, especially when you transition out of the dank sewers into the open. It's a pity there's no new music, but the trusty IDMUS should take care of that (E2M2's music fits pretty well). A pretty good map to play, especially if you're hungry for the classic E1 style of maps with a good sense of place. [Originally written Dec 2018 for The /newstuff Chronicles]

    Community Chest 4

Great variety, definitely my favourite of the mapsets I've played. The thing that makes me love it the most is the music, especially when played with the sounds from Doom on Xbox 360. The Grotto (one of the coolest maps), Crusifix Held Close, Spiritual Holocaust, Hell's limits, Inner Fear, and (my favourite) Nightmare Complex all has great music. Some songs are from other games, and some are written specifically for the maps. However, not every single map is great, hence the four stars.

    Jupiter Carnage 3!

    Version

    28 downloads

-- achtung! the map replaces E4M3! -- Doomguy busted the Hell armada's ass again, right? Didn't he? Oh hell yes he did! But, as he was busting its ass, the nefarious hellspawn decided to take over a base on the Moon, owned by Our Hero's friend from high school. To make things worse, the base was working on research of an experimental acid, made for military purposes, so now there should be nukage all over the place. Hooray. The Doomguy says, exiting Hell to his clear and sterile Jupiter station: "Friends will be friends 'till the end". And so, carrying only his trusty pistol, Doomguy hops on a ship, entering "MOON" to its GPS. Mission: DEMONstr8 the powers of friendship to the ugly demons, get to your friend's secret bunker. Are you man enough? Yep, we've gone faaaaar from Jupiter, but no one cares. If you want a plot, go to a library dammit! --------------------------------- Now, about the map itself: It is kinda inspired by Vrack 1 and 2. Much more simple in design, though. The map is quite tough, but with very few slaughter moments. The "hordes" are 25 Imps tops. Actually... Also, there is a "sewers" section, inspired by the bonus level of1 XBox Doom (E1M10: Sewers). For the folks who care -- 12750 sidedefs. A walkthrough demo is provided in the WAD, so don't complain about getting lost. -------------------------------- Oh, and if you actually play thru this, just leave a comment wherever you got it, it'll really mean me a lot :] Please? Or, if you're some sort of WAD reviewer... well you know what to do. Thanks!

For me this is one of the best wads for many years. All the new designs work perfectly the monsters are actually an improvement on IDs in my opinion. I could go on but I suggest you try for yourself. I did all 32 levels without saving on HMP and some of them took me days and days such is the quality. I personally got more value from this wad than I would from a $100 Xbox/PS4 title and for that I say thanks. Well done.

    Sewers

This is from June 1996. It's not the same "Sewers" that was included as a bonus map with the Collector's Edition of XBox Doom III (which is in the archive as id=13407). Instead this is a dismal dark maze, poorly-designed, ugly-looking, no fun to play, totally out of date even for 1996. I hated it.

0/5, this is terrible. Different wall textures that aren't secret doors, water on top of stairs randomly, huge long 1024 x 64 hallways that are so linear its pointless, and to top it off: it gets worse at the end. This was released with xbox to punish doom players.

    DOOM v1.9 - Shareware

Isn't it kind of bullshit that the demo versions of DOOM on Xbox Live and the Playstation network only let you play for like 3 minutes before they make you stop? Technically the first 9 maps have always been free to play. I'm calling bullshit on Bethesda for that. Make E1 free. (5 stars, goes without saying)

    Urban Brawl: Action DooM 2

This is unbelievable. Since this does not use Doom 2, you guys should try to sell it on xbox live. Microsoft will have a new feature where the community can submit their work for download. I don't know the precise info, but it might be worth considering. Really fun to play, easy to pick up, fantastic visuals... wowawow. By the way, how many endings are there? I get the feeling that there are more than 2. Anyone know?

    Suspended in Dusk

Very enjoyable! I wish there were more like this one! It even works on DOOMX (for the XBOX) thankx to the lack of Deh and BOOM features! Simply AMAZING!

Props for getting this map into XBox Doom3.

    SEWERS.ZIP

Trivia fact; this was given away as a bonus with the XBox version of Doom. It's a large, sprawling level, very unfocused but with a lot of action (and unfortunately a lot of running about).

    SEWERS.ZIP

It was used on Xbox, so its okay to distribute it right? I was thinking of putting this map in a wad with modified doom alpha levels.
