    What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

    What a coincidence, I'm getting utterly humiliated in Xenotilt! I can't overstate how good this game feels, though. Right out of the gate it's as good as Demon's Tilt, but brasher, more vindictive. What would have been the most frenetic moments from the first game now feel more commonplace, and the most frenetic moments in this one are really over-the-top. The screen shaking through a storm of explosions, trash mobs getting chewed up by concentrated laser fire, boss enemies shattering apart as you hammer on them over and over and over - I love digital replicas of real pinball tables, but this is what it video game pinball is meant to feel like.
  2. Doom's not going anywhere. The ADHD lynch mob will lose interest and proceed to the next big thing to dunk on. Breaking news about omg did the thing, and another influencer drama video taking 20 minutes to explain something that could be explained in 10 seconds.
  3. Was Mick deliberately inciting a witch hunt? I don't think that can be said with certainty. After all, he was answering questions given to him and was likely overwhelmed by the negative reception directed towards the quality of the soundtrack. However, I can see why someone may come up with this interpretation; his comments were extremely vague and cryptic and he made no attempt to quell the hate mob that ensued. So, what I will say is that he didn't handle the situation in public very professionally, nor was Marty's Reddit post completely unsolicited (even if its authenticity is up in the air).

    MAP03 - Foundations Fun map! Wide variety of mobs, very interesting hub design. SSG finally appears in this level, which is great, altough it is in a very out of sight spot which i suspect most people wont find. Aesthetics are reeally nice, like the original doom with a little more emphasis on lighting, which I love. MAP04 - The Archviles Archives Archvile finally appears, as a little mini boss before the final section, though he's on his own. The whole map seems to take place in some sort of mansion with a library, an office with pieces of paper that say 'kinda' on them, and a basement. Fun little level with a little puzzle involving pushing buttons and rushing over to the temporarily opened section.

    Lakeside - An Egyptian Themed Map

    Insanely nice map, seems like a simple places och detailing, but so well matched by texturing, the balance of combat and atmosphere. Only one problem. which would be worth correcting, at the very end of the map, the final battle of the pyramid completely ran out of ammo, and had to leave a couple of mobs unkillable unfortunately. It's not that I as something mowed constantly, etc., almost every shot I shot at the level hit the target, but I have not found any secrets. And more screenshots (as well, if I were the author would add at least 2 or 3 more of what some screenshots, there is something to show and thus sell the map to a passing user):

    Facebook is a trainwreck with regards to free speech moderation. If you report racist jokes, nobody bats an eye. But the power of the mob can mass-report anything you do to ban you for 30 days, just because you said "shit" three years ago.

    hc_ironman_eviternity.zip (Category 1, recorded in PrBoom+ 2.5.1.4) Dead in Map01; chewed up by hitscanners while trying to push through the mobs. Cool level in how the monster density applies a sustained pressure - it's nice that the low-tier monsters get a chance to seem menacing for once. I'll have to give E1 an actual playthrough sometime.

    Yes, it absolutely is, for the same reason that people make Tool Assisted Speedruns that completely break a game. Making old games do shit they're not supposed to do is cool. It's not like you're going to get an angry mob coming after you just because somebody's ACE exploit doesn't work in GZDoom.

    I disagree. A lockdown would have been a rather clever way to justify being unable to access the whole map from the get-go and having mobs of paranoid, gun-toting wannabe insurrectionists roaming the streets could have justified all sorts of wacky hijinks. Plus the early days of the pandemic are full of anecdotes that would make for fun satirical quests, like getting in fights over paper towels, dealing with hoarders and driving snakes oil salespersons out of town; it would have been an interesting chance of pace from the usual crime stuff.
  10. Fun stuff as always, Red. The occasional lips and wider safe spaces, in combination with the denial of space from the mobs, worked well to make the damaging floor feel pretty dynamic. Really liked how late into the piece the radsuit came into play, because your impression with the monster count at that point is, "but I'm nearly done?". Even got got on HNTR because I panicked when I fought the archie, because I totally forgot I had the protection... EDIT: can't believe I forgot to comment on the textures. For some reason I had expected them to be wildly different, but they feel like they will mesh well with stock stuff. Love the blast door marking for the exit.
  11. I was able to play the first few maps and honestly, they were far more substantive than I was expecting. Hell Palace was quite uninviting thanks to the proliferation of hitscanners. To be fair, I wasn't playing very well. Although the Invulnerbiity spheres may have been meaningless. Though worst was probably the absence of a non-stock midi. Map 03 was basically the complete opposite on the other hand. So many mobs of enemies and yet hardly any ammo to bother with. Missing the plasma rifle may have been a mistake but otherwise, it just seems like infighting is far too dependent regarding the chances of getting 100 percent kills. lmd_halls.zip

    I think one of the largest threats to free speech on Twitter (and Reddit and everywhere else it’s free and easy to make accounts) is the asymmetry of disinformation sock puppets to people acting in good faith, and I think that might be the most interesting problem which I hope gets tackled. The town square concept of free speech is disrupted by paid mobs acting on behalf of someone else’s bad faith, and so to truly return to “public discourse, but on the internet”, I think that has to be solved. This is a more subtle issue with free speech on the internet, and is why so many people now associate free speech with racist shitposting or disinformation. The problem is that wrongthink from good faith actors is now basically the worst possible thing ever and that is the greatest threat to actual free speech that exists right now. This is because of weaponized mob rule and the ease of mob rule when it’s asymmetrically easier to be a fake account posting bullshit 24/7 than a real account trying to post in earnest. I really hope if Musk is serious, he starts thinking about how to reconcile all these different things; anonymity, affordability, not being beholden to any advertiser, accountability, spam and shitpost prevention but in some transparent way so that no one can come and claim they are censored when their garbage is hidden from most people due to preference, etc. I really find the idea of cutting out bad faith actors (from site operators to users) while maintaining the internet message board experience an intriguing topic, and I’ve come to some conclusions personally that certain things are fundamentally incompatible without trade offs, when going down the list of requirements. But I really hope this is what Musk has in mind as well, and since I don’t think he can make Twitter any worse, I’m tentatively excited to see.

    The ruining the lives of chuds thing is a real rewriting of history. When I think of most internet mob “justice” it’s things like Redditors “finding” the Boston Bomber or death threats sent to someone with the same name as a person who said a mean thing. Conflating that kind of thing with calling people out for having unapologetic bad takes while in a position of power is just nonsense.
  15. My issue is not getting the trick right, it's what comes after. Let's say I get it (I don't think it's that hard as long as you're not playing keyboard only), I'm still left with killing the cybs on the IoS panels and a crapton of lower-tier mobs in the main area. There's nowhere near enough ammo so I've got to make them infight, right? But that's a real pain in the ass because you have to herd the monsters to where the cybs are without getting hit by stray projectiles and rockets, rinse and repeat. Only then will I have enough ammo to kill off the rest of the cybs and kill the SMM. The lack of health makes this extremely difficult. Unless I'm missing something else...

    Map10- Culture et Confiture de Mobs by Jambon 100% kills Well, I like the simple library theme and the music selection fits the quaint library. The title is silly and Jambon's little ham signature is cute and endearing. Oh and the specter room was alright. Unfortunately, everything else served is just, not that good honestly. It's symmetric in map design leading to repeat encounters, all of which are very uninteresting and pretty annoying. Coupled with the low margin of error due to the low offering of medkits and stimpacks, it can get tedious pretty quick. Did not enjoy this one plain and simple.
  17. Oh yes, now I can already see the great leap to Community Project. I hope you get a megawad of the same quality as Machete) Maybe I'll even take part in it later. The only small point. If you want your work to be cooperative-compatible, it's not enough to just add extra player starts. You have to make sure that the player can get to the right point after respawning. I.e. if there's going to be some arena with doors closing behind the back and everything, there should definitely be a one-way extra pass to that arena so you can get to it again. Well, and additional cooperative arrangement of mobs will also be a good plus. Good luck!

    I did the same tagging the secret without grabbing the chainsaw on map02. I think the only map I grab it on is map04 and it's only to avoid accidentally grabbing it and weapon switching. Especially bad if you get mobbed by turbo pinkies. I had a brief look at the new map the other night. Looks kinda tricky with fast monsters. I might give it a go at some point, though I think I need to play something a bit more chill first :-).

    I just wish for 3D version of original Doom, with modern graphics e t.c. stuff and hundreds deaths by BFG and rocket shots on one map! Something like that. Don't wanna (not too) "smart" game mechanics and mobs with tons of HP, just rip n' tear to the max!

  22. I'm thinking that a map of mine could include some civilians, both lab and regular clothing, that basically add to the immersion of the map and give the player an optional objective to try to save as many as he can from hell spawn while going through. Is there a collection like that anywhere?

    Doom Pictures Thread 2020

    Some boom thing I've made over the last couple of weeks. Idea was a slaughter map beatable in about 5 minutes which has largely been met (1000 mobs and clearable in a touch over 6 min atm). Pretty much done, the gameplay just needs a bit of refinement and a few visual touch ups.

    How do I encourage players to switch weapons?

    Tight spaces will discourage the use of the rocket launcher, a berserk pack will incentivize taking down a few monsters with punches to save ammo, a mob in the distance will maybe make you swap to the chaingun to swat them out... You gotta create situations that have a right tool for the job so to speak and balance ammo appropriately. But that should definitely be an afterthought compared to creating fun encounters, you could allow some player freedom or make it gimmicky if you like, whatever you are most comfortable with crafting.
  25. More than harder, it's really the type of fight that doesn't scream Plutonia to me - most of the maps so far are really bite-sized areans, with an arena style of combat and mob management. It gets more marked as maps progress, and the monster count rises. Not a criticism, it's actually quite fun! But yeah, don't really see much Plutonia here personally. Only thing that really irked me so far is in MAP02 - the BoH immediately bashed the chaingunner, leaving me to pistol and punch it down. Nice trick but a bit too RNG based.
