Duke Nukem Countdown?

I just tweeted at Randy about it, the more people he hears it from the better I'd say. Though maybe they're still working on it.

This is Randy "Science Porn triggered me" Pitchford you're talking about.
The likelihood of him listening to feedback is exactly zero.

And I believe it can get worse.
Calling it now: They replaced the original Duke3D GRPs with a completely different data storage filetype so that playing the game using eDuke32 becomes impossible.

Or playing the various existing expansions that they intend to re-release for an additional $20 a piece later.

How have they made the audio worse?

If that isn't fixed before release then honestly that's just embarrassing.

Lol Jesus. It looks like they changed the health packs to little pills. That's stupid.

The Red Cross has cracked down on the use of its symbol, especially in video games.

Why replace them with lame pills? Should've used soda cans instead.

Doom had to do the same thing, the Doom and Doom2 iwads included with Doom3 BFG edition have the health packs altered like that. I agree soda cans would be a funny throwback to 2D Duke.

This is somewhat disappointing for those who already own duke3d and or the megaton collection. The new episode is cool but I don't know about paying $20 for something I've had for ages, rebought and have to again buy the same game for the new episode. I was hoping that the leak was true plus an actual announcement of a new game. Goddamn it.. still holding on to hope that Blood will come back after Jace Hall's Twitter hint.

all of the spoken dialogue also sounds a tad too slow. especially the pain grunts could stand to be sped up a tad to better sync up to the original voice-overs, but that's probably the least of this re-release's problems now...

What the shit was going on in front of the cinema at the start? Was some turning lighting on and off?!

Also the person playing it sadly needs to be put down.

Still, I am interested in this, I hope they do some polishing. And I am not sure which episodes are included either.

That was them switching between the fancy lighting 3D mode and the classic original renderer look, to show the differences.

It includes the original episode 1-4 (Atomic Edition), and a new episode by the classic level designers.

But will it include the official expansion packs? Thats a big plus from the megaton edition, and as far as I can tell, the only thing this port has going for it as far as I can tell is muffled sounds, high quality non fitting uninterested douk, someone's experiment with dynamic lights and the new episode, wich I guess its ok.

It does not. That's been one of the key controversies, on top of no discount for megaton owners.

Great. Nice thing I got the megaton edition before it was pulled out of steam.

The flow of the campaign is nearly identical to Half-Life 2, and not very similar to how Borderlands plays (in Borderlands you get quests/missions from NPCs etc). But we'v established earlier the two of us don't see eye to eye on DNF. If we're talking specifically combat, the feel of it reminds me a bit of Doom3. Only with bigger encounters/waves, and more groovy weapons.

7 minutes to go! (lucky)

What??? It doesn't play like HL2... Half Life 2 is cohesive design, you go from City 17, Canals, Highway, Beach, Nova P, City 17. You can almost feel the change the world had thanks to the combine. It was a extremly good experience, released in 2004.

While in the other hand, DNF was a mess, merging gameplay and designs from different eras released in 2011.

Duke Nukem Forever is a shame to the gaming world, it was able to beat Daikatana...

By the way i got DNF the same day it was released, made me so sad.

Not buying this POS, i been playing Duke Games since the original one... I already bought this game way too many times a lousy episode won't do it.

What??? HL2 is a hodgepodge of set-pieces that exist solely for NPC exposition and playing with the Gravity Gun. Hop into a boat for 45 minutes... stack blocks... listen to everyone talk about you as some mythical hero... cross a bridge... we don't go to Raven-go to Ravenholm... Battle war of the world striders... then end up in some alien tower.

I say this every discussion, every time, and it's so true; Half Life 2 is a mess.

I greatly agree with Scuba Steve there, it's as much of a scripted mess as call of duty, except gimmickier and longer.

I compared them, but I like the both a lot. HL2 for me is a good example of linear done well. Much more interesting than a CoD campaign. Though replaying it over 10 years later, babysitting your car can get old after a while, I'd rather get lost in some immersive location on foot. Babysitting Duke's monster truck is similar in DNF, oddly enough the two games have a similar campaign structure. DNF even gives HL a winking nudge when Duke says "I hate valve puzzles" at one point. As we know, 3DR loves them.

I personally don't consider HL2 a mess, everybody likes different stuff, but it's definitely a different style altogether than the classic FPS style of Duke 3D, or Doom etc.

Linearity is still linearity and I really couldn't enjoy HL2 anymore after the first playthrough, it was mostly just the particular story which interested me but is no longer intriguing after the first time.

So far, non linear campaings are a gimmick. I have yet to play a game that's worth playing a second time simply because it will be different than the first, it hardly ever is different in the grand scheme of things. Until theyre truly non linear like real life I'll just replay the campaign cause it was fun, and I want that same experience again.

Seriously, these rpg games like fallout you can manipulate the game to do what you want because you know the scripted outcome. This to me is still a form of linearity.

A mess that considered one of the best FPS of all times. I can't see where exactly is the mess you're describing in Half Life 2.

It just proves that people have no idea what they're talking about because HL2 series picked up only with E1 and E2. The base game is the most overrated, mediocre and disconnected collection of gameplay experiments I've ever seen and I'll never understand how can anyone in the right mind claim it's one of the best games ever made.

So everyone that thinks that HL2 is a great game have no idea what they're talking about yet you somehow knows better, okay. And I didn't claim it to be one of the best FPS of all times, game magazine gave it high scores and awards.

Calling it a big mess is nonsensical.

I fail to see how HL2 is a mess. It's quite connected and cohesive, especially for an FPS from 2004.

You get off a train, explore a small part of City 17, wander through some apartments and run along some roofs, get saved by Alyx and shown the underground lab, go on the run through trainyards and tunnels, and end up on the outskirts with a boat in an attempt to make it to Eli's lab. All of this was in the span of a day too, as it was assumed to be around midday when you got off the train and by the time you make it to Eli it's night.

All night you go through Ravenholm, by the time you get out of the mines you're back in City 17 next to a trainyard, you get the car as you drive on the deserted outskirts and deal with the Ant Lions, make your way to Nova Prospekt, fight through it, meet up with Alyx, use a Combine teleporter, end up back in Kleiner's lab, and from this point on you fight through City 17 to reach the Citadel.

So no, it's not as disconnected as you make it out to be, unless you are ignoring the progression on purpose.

And you're perfectly free to have that opinion, just first realize it's the minority opinion. If you can't understand the basic concept of differing tastes and expectations, well...

Just listen to the dick-stroking every time HL2 is mentioned. It routinely tops HL1 in "best evar" lists which I think, one could argue, is objectively wrong. Half Life 1 changed gaming forever; it was revolutionary. Half Life 2 is evolutionary; it didn't change the direction of games, nobody copied from it. It is merely a good shooter from 2004 with high production values.

There is literally no story and the levels have little cohesion. Ravenholm was obviously added because zombies. You end up on a beach laying down metal plates as an excuse to use the gravity gun... it's so forced and feels like very dated game design.

One of the better articles I've read recently on why HL2 is so mediocre.

While it's still decent I personally think HL1 is super overrated. It's got terrible AI that is loaded with more subtly than function, bizarre level design since we hadn't completely escaped the 90s by the time we attempted real world locations, and annoyingly unresponsive and clunky gunplay which is made worse by playing on Hard.

What in Sam Hill are you blathering about? The game has plenty of world building and expository dialogue, especially for a first person shooter. Granted, it's not the most original story in the world, but the characters are all very fleshed out, and the dialogue is excellent.

Half-Life 2 isn't anywhere close to being one of my personal favourite first person shooters, but its popularity and critical acclaim are more than warranted. The only thing I can really nitpick about the game is that the strider battle at the end of Episode 2 went on a bit longer than it should have. Half-Life 2 is impeccable.
