PUSS VI: Imperfect Hatred - Final Version Out Now!

I'm still deciding on what to do with Gothic's submission. The rules state that I can't accept it due to the self admitted time-breakage. But I would still like to include the map either way. More on that later.

Heh, I for one would happily participate in PUSS VII: In Search of Nirvana. I have a degree of affection for that map, though that may just be the contrarian in me speaking.

 

For real, though, I'd suggest MAP16 as the subject of a future PUSS. Its low level of detail, distinct core concept and general infamy make for an excellent candidate. Another choice could be MAP02, since of all Doom 2 maps it is probably the second most iconic, but yet is rarely remade in the same way MAP01 is.

 

Finally, if you were to return to Ultimate Doom, I'd suggest E3M4, one of the most interesting (to me, anyway) and overlooked maps in the IWAD. Its low level of detail and identifiable gimmicks make it a pretty good speedmap candidate. The main downside is that not very many people remember the map, let alone like it.

 

Regardless, I'm interested to see what the seventy-second cerulean ananas comosus has in store for us next month!

Thanks for the suggestions! As for our next few events, I don’t wanna sound like a square... but they’re gonna be pretty Rowdy. I’m hoping not to alienate anyone with the event themes.

Small update V1.01.

HHF.zip

 

- Added tiny tiny bit more health/ammo.

- Made two secrets MORE OBVIOUS.

-Slighty (really slightly) adjusted monster count / placement.

-Added one more rad suit on left side.

-Fixed a texture alignment issue.

Imperfect Hatred will be closing in two days! Submission deadline is the 24th at 11:59 EST!

 

I'm planning on releasing the wad sometime this weekend, certainly before Sunday. I'll be recording playtesting videos for each map.

 

The submission deadline for bug fixes is one week after I upload the final video of the last map. After your map has been recorded, you will be granted an additional 15 minutes to crack your map open and make any minor changes needed. No additional rooms/major additions can be added during this clemency period.

 

Going forward, the above bug fixing guideline will be included with each event's General Guidelines.

Edit: Also, it has been decided. Your map will be accepted @Gothic. It will occupy the Map31 slot, accessible through @Weird Sandwich's MAP15.

Actually I would like my map out of this project, it wouldn't be fair for people who actually made it in time, and compared to other maps here, mine isn't as creative as the rest.

Map Name: Disdain for Plebs

Author: ViolentBeetle

Music: The Face of Wrath by Stewboy

Format: Doom 2

Difficulty Settings: By monster count

Build Time: 5 hours 40 minutes

Gimmicks Used: Damaging floor in central area with a staircase. Hot start with caco swarm. Central platforming section (Sort of). Cyberdemon turret (But guards supercharge instead of BFG, BFG would break the map open)

Comments: I never found time and energy to actually refresh my memories of Perfect Hatred.

 

Updated the submission to fix some lighting, monster teleports and also have an exit sign. I think you avoided the version with game-breaking bug.

Format: Limit Removing

Difficulty Settings: UV (ran out of time for the other ones)

Build Time: 6 hours exactly

Gimmicks Used: 
- Hot start (w/ Cacos)

- Rocky cave beset with lost souls and specters 

- Platform connecting the parts of the map together

Comments:

- Originally started as a tropical-themed map but evolved into an aquatic ruin.

- Mapped live on my Twitch in two 3 hour-long sessions.

Difficulties: Some balancing done, not tested.

Build Time: 6 hours, with some time spent drawing the layout on paper onstream.

Ports Tested: GZDoom, Crispy Doom. Will not run in Chocolate due to huge drawseg overflow.

Gimmicks Used: BFG cyber guardian, hot tomato start, baron parapets, central platforming hub, damaging floor + stairwell, D1 monster and weapon roster only.

Difficulty Settings: Yes, roughly

Build Time: 6 hours 3 minutes

Gimmicks Used: 

- Circular room with barons of hell on the perimeter
- Hot start with caco

- Rocky cave beset with lost souls and specters 

- Platform connecting the parts of the map together

- Cyberdemon Turret guarding a secret BFG

 

Comments: I almost forgot to add any textures from the CChest4 wad, so mostly vanila textures on this one.

The room becomes a platform later on, the player isn't supposed to be able to reach it before then. It may be broken somehow, I'll investigate.

LAST DAY FOR SUBMISSIONS

Also, fore warning: @muumi @Omniarch, an error in my compiling had both your maps swapped in their slots, therefore when playing The Hateful Earth, I thought I was playing Muumi's level, and visa versa for Cruciform (I recognized the screenshot Muumi posted and thought something was strange, it wasn't revisiting this thread that I realized my err). A video will be up sometime tomorrow. I'm apologizing in advance since I kept on addressing the wrong mapper whilst playing your maps and now I feel bad :(

Either way, good work to both of you. Stellar work on both fronts.

I'm glad you liked The Hateful Earth! I spent way too long agonizing over what spin I was going to put on the E4M2 formula (I entertained the notion of a Plutonic, Metal or even E1-style take, before eventually settling on an earthy theme), so I'm glad to see that it paid off! After seeing your playthrough, I wish I had made the RL more obvious, since the intended passage of play is to grab it quickly, jump down into the drink and quickly blast all the cacos to kingdom come with righteous explosive wrath. As for the note about door fighting, I'm glad to see that worked out, since I dislike over-cautious play as both a player and a mapper. I don't come to Doom to play CoD after all!

 

Also, me getting mistaken for @muumi is frankly a compliment, so don't feel bad!

 

Just a small note: the soulsphere behind the baron is the last secret, which somehow didn't get tagged when you found it? Might want to take a look at that.

Comments: The hardest level I've ever made. No forreal. This bad boy hurts.

I still haven't beaten it on UV.  As far as I can tell the best starting strategy is to gear up, jump into the lava, grab a suit and supercharge, then go collect the ssg and hang out with the Spider.

 

The bars that lower so that you can get on the lift away from the blue skull key really, REALLY suck.

 

You either have to stand on damaging floor waiting for the lift to go up, or you have to perfectly time the rush to the lift so that you're not hanging out taking pointless unearned damage.  Either that, or you're supposed to stop what you're doing and time the lowering of the lift so that.. I don't know, the bars lower to the bottom of the lift instead of the top?  It's a feature that isn't fun, whatever it is.

 

Also, is Doom2 the wrong iwad for this?

A month's worth of perfectionism and intolerance have come to a head. Welcome IMPERFECT HATRED, a 27 map megaWAD created in honor of the original speedmap! I don't think it's much of a guess what that map is.

Phew! Another month down. This one was an absolute blast to work for. E4M2 is my favorite IWAD level, and I truly think that we have done it's tribute justice for this month's speedmap competition. I do wish that February wasn't the freak month with less days so that I could have more time to further polish this for a cleaner version 1, but there are always updates that I can shoot out. 
 

I hope you're ready for next month... A ruthless cabal of nefarious mercenary terrorist madmen are planning on only world domination. 

 

You only have 6 hours to stop them in...

No. The map is to be loaded with the CC4 resource pack. Thankfully for you, I've compiled this map and all of the others into a singular wad file above.
