While I do like the idea of a Chex Quest slaughter mapset, these ported Sunder maps don't seem to fit well with Chex Quest's gameplay balance. However I do give TrueDude credit for porting(and permission from the original creator for porting these maps) as I personally think these maps do look aesthetically pleasing with Chex Quest textures. 2/5 - Philnemba

The most comprehensive expansion to Chex(R) Quest in years (if not ever), this megawad adds a fourth, nine-level episode to the original campaign, three hidden bonus levels, and seven multiplayer maps with support for a variety of game modes as well as various updates to make Chex(R) Quest 3 compatible with the latest versions of ZDoom and GZDoom. -

This is a map I scrapped from a 2-episode wad I'm working on for Chex Quest. It is my first attempt working with the set of features ZDoom has to offer. This level simply doesn't fit with what I'm currently doing with the rest of the mapset both plot-wise and gameplay-wise. There's also the fact that due to some screwing around in SLADE 3, this wad is now somehow permanently corrupted when loaded in Doom Builder 2. Don't ask why. Anyway, It was inspired by E3M1 of Chex Quest 3 and is designed to be quite difficult. Watch out for that ending! Criticism and other comments are welcome! -

This is a mod that automates the process of pistol starting in Doom and several other IWADs. It makes no other changes to gameplay in the IWADs or other mods that the included "pistol starters" are compatible with. Usage is simple: Load only one pistol starter, and load it after whatever WADs you want to use. Autosaves should be enabled, and the game should be played as in normal continuous play. The process of pistol starting will be performed for you automatically via ACS scripting. At the start of each level a script will run. It will remove from all players all weapons, armor, ammo, etc. and give them the default weapons and ammo and reset their health to 100. If autosaving is enabled the game will then save your progress as it would otherwise. You will be able to play the entire game with no need for cheats or further configuration. These pistol starters should only be used with IWADs, megawads and other mods that include multiple levels and are "pistol start friendly", such as Ancient Aliens, Sunlust or Valiant. For Freedoom use the pistol starters for Doom or Brutal Doom. Chex Quest 3, Hacx, and Heretic have been given pistol starters because of the similarity of their structure and gameplay to Doom. Other IWADs such as Hexen and Strife were not, due to their unsuitability for pistol starts. If any other mod or IWAD is hub-based or otherwise dependent on continuous gameplay, it may be "broken" by these scripts. If a WAD only includes one map these scripts would be pointless. If a WAD includes custom weapons it will not work as intended unless the pistol starter is compatible. Pistol starters for several mods have been included: Beautiful Doom v6.1.0.2 Brutal Doom v20b Elf Gets Pissed v1.1 PerK's Smoother Weapon Animations Enhanced Strange Aeons v5.4 Valiant The pistol starter for Brutal Doom v20b includes a patch for the error that prevents Brutal Doom from working with recent versions of GZDoom, which is the reason why this pistol starter is in ".pk3" format instead of ".wad". It will also "remember" whether the initial "crack knuckles and load rifle" and shotgun-pump animations have played and skip them in future maps as they would be skipped normally. As for the pistol starter for Elf Gets Pissed: It will remember whether or not the Lightbringer was found, and will give it back to the player on pistol start, along with the amount of ammo that would have been given on pickup. (120 on skills 0 and 4, 80 otherwise) For Strange Aeons: It will remember the Yithian Lightning Gun, giving it back after pistol start if it was found, along with the ammo given on pickup. (80 on skills 0 and 4, 40 otherwise) This is a list of the included pistol starters: (IWAD) Doom and Freedoom: pstlstrt.wad (Mod) Brutal Doom v20b: btlpstrt.pk3 (Mod) Beautiful Doom v6.1.0.2: bdpsstrt.wad (Mod) Elf Gets Pissed v1.1: egpsstrt.wad (IWAD) Heretic: evwdstrt.wad (IWAD) Hacx: hxpsstrt.wad (IWAD) Chex Quest 3: mzchstrt.wad (Mod) PerK's SWAE: pkpsstrt.wad (Mod) Strange Aeons: sassstrt.wad (Mod) Valiant: vlpsstrt.wad The pistol starter for Brutal Doom is compatible with Freedoom if used with Brutal Doom v20b. It is not intended for use with mods based on Brutal Doom, such as Project Brutality. (It may work correctly, it but probably won't.) The pistol starter for PerK's Smoother Weapon Animations Enhanced can be used with either the brown or black gloves editions, and is also fully compatible with Smooth Doom. The Valiant pistol starter is intended for use with skillsaw's "Valiant.wad" and "sawdust.wad". For Valiant: Vaccinated Edition use either the Doom pistol starter, or the one intended for whatever mod you want to use with it. The original ACS script source files have been left inside each pistol starter WAD, and are commented for reference. The source files could be used to make more pistol starters for other mods and IWADS. -

This is the final version of Newmaps. Newmaps is a Chex Quest mod (*cough*) based on The Ultimate Chex Quest. In May 2005 I came across The Ultimate Chex Quest. Then I saw some of the fanmade maps and thought: "Hey! Why don't I try my hand at making Chex Quest levels?" And so Newmaps was started. In June of 2005 I released the first beta which only had the first two maps complete. Back then, I only planned to make five or so levels, but then I started making more and more and it became this big thing. I don't even want to think of how many hours I put into it. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making it for you. (Man, how many times has this been said before?) (NOTE: If you just play the first few levels and decide it's too boring and stop playing, don't. Remember, I had just learned to map when I made those. The later ones are much cooler!) (ANOTHER NOTE: This game was designed with OpenGL in mind. While the game will run in software mode, some things will not work properly. So I strongly suggest using OpenGL mode AT ANY COST!!! If you can't use OpenGL mode, oh well.) (YET ANOTHER NOTE: If you shut the game off, load a game, start a new game, etc. during a cutscene, specifically while the screen is black, it will be black when you start the other game! Wait until it's over, (Or just skip it, see THE LUCKY SEVENTH NOTE) then do your other stuff. If, for some reason, you do this, play the cutscene again. (And finish it this time!)) (NOTES - VOLUME IV: The fade to black effects are done by changing the fog settings. Since I have no way of knowing your fog settings, they are reset to the defaults. (Color: 000000, Density: 100) So if you had settings other than the defaults, they will be defaulted. Sorry, but this was the only way I could do it.) (PENTANOTE: The sniper scope. One of the coolest things in the game is the sniper scope. While you have the large zorcher equipped, press 'z' to activate sniper mode, and press 'x' or switch to a different weapon to deactivate it.) (THE SIXTH NOTE: If you do any of the stuff described in 'YET ANOTHER NOTE' while in sniper mode, you will not be able to see your weapons. If you do that, Don't Panic! Just turn sniper mode on and off. They'll be back.) (THE LUCKY SEVENTH NOTE: Starting with beta 10.5, all cutscenes are skippable. Just press the spacebar during one to skip it.) (ONE MORE, FOR GOOD MEASURE: This is Newmaps episodes 1-3. Episode IV is not included in this WAD. You can check for progress on that at my website: http://xbolt.knowledgehouse.info) -

I should've chex®ed myself before I wrexed myself. Even without the canonical Digital Cafe© texture alignment and detailing, the gameplay is fuxed. The only ammo in the level is inside a secret in a maze™ and guarded by a bung-load of monsters. I ended up having to use the plasma rifle™ to push the fukken® baron™ aside so I could dodge his poorly-cropped ass and get to the exit. In short, Chex® Quest™ is a dumping ground for '94™ filth, and you should buy all the fucking Chex®. 5/5 -IGN

I enjoyed this. It reminded me of the old dinosaur game Trespasser, or the first Tomb Raider game, or Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, or one of those old graphic text adventures. I can envisage an alternative world where someone licensed the Doom engine in 1994 and made this instead of (for example) Chex Quest. It's a bit slow-paced although in the light of Hellcore 2.0 it doesn't seem so bad in this respect. Someone hire this man now.
