I once invested myself some times on learning the engine when they're released the source code for their first engine. I love Serious Sam, the game brought me into Gaming at the first place. but the monster AI is really kinda unfair tbh.

I like to think of Dooms slaughter wads as being similar to serious sam. its a solid game. You should try the HD First encounter and HD Second encounter too. They're obviously a bit dated, but they are insanely fun.

I am actually quite fine with old games so I wouldn't really care if they are a bit dated.

Make sure you are setting fogdensity in MAPINFO. This property "fixes" fog so that it gets applied evenly across all light levels. Normal GZDoom fog behavior is rather odd.

I wanted a fog which shows at a distance rather than fill up the whole room like the default fog in the source port.

This could be simulated with some linedef trickery - have it so the fog is set when you cross a linedef at a distance, perhaps? You may be able to play with it enough that it has a 'gradual fade' effect. Alternately, if you're willing to get super advanced about it, have a script running that checks your distance from a hidden / invisible actor at the point of the fog.

You could also use translucent, solid-colour midtextures which are activated the same way as the abovementioned idea.

No problem, its not very clear really, I had to play around a bit. The other option above just sets the default colour for the sector, its a more artifical effect, so that when you enter a sector your weapon will change ot that colour and such. Good luck with your maps!

I am mostly just testing custom textures along with a kind of scene with fog, but thanks for the well wishes.

Well I hope it gives you some inspiration for a future map. I added fog to an old map I did yesterday and god it made a beautiful difference.

I would be interested. I've never played past Act 2, despite loving the game. Something always finds a way to stop me playing and then I either get back into Doom mapping or something else, heh. The only issue you and I would have of playing coop is:

- Timezones

- I work shift work, as in, different hours every day / week.

Excuse 2: Ladder resetting next week (30th).

Star Trek Online the game I usually play is currently on an extended maintenance of 8 hours now, perhaps this would be the perfect time to fire up D2.

It looks like, in mapinfo, you'd simply type:

sky1 sky1 (number here)

when defining the sky for the map. 0.01 being a slow scroll, for example.

I did forget to mention that I am using GZDoom Builder and the map is going to be in UDMF. I don't know if mapinfo works that way with just any texture.

When I updated GZDoom to 2.4.0 (this was before 3.0.0), I was using the skies definitions in the MAPINFO with the old format (i.e. 20 instead of something like 0.2). When I played my maps, the skies were scrolling at insane speeds.

Do you have an idea as to what caused it? Or is it just an "out of the blue" experience at the moment? Here's hoping it's a "one of a kind" type of event.

Ah...Sudden Death. You have 30 seconds to pick everything you can...I discovered that level when I was trying to reach that place with a grenade-jump loooong ago...probably about 15 years ago?

Disappointing map, Lost Station got my hopes up and in true Quake 2 fashion all the promise of the early game was dashed as it went on.

However, it is incomplete and unlikely to be completed. All the textures are on my old, dead HDD, I'll have to retrieve them someday, but I don't think Shadow Temple was done, like, at all, I drew mostly on the Spirit temple and Fire Temple. I had to resize all textures/flats, I used MS "Photo Manager" that came with Office 2007. Didn't lose any noticeable integrity.

Word of advice though, prepare for really bad palette translations and very awkward structuring. Dragonfly is also right you'll find you have to do a lot of mixing and matching from various parts. You'll also have to do a ton of actual texture editing and lighting work in the map to make it look half decent. Lighting is literally the most important thing to make or break these textures unless you make a palette specific to them. It also really suffered in software vs OGL, I highly highly recommend using some port that supports true color or OGL.

Oh neat, didn't realize it had finally updated, it had been quite some time since I had retrieved them... Provided the format is the same, all the textures were pretty well within their named folders unless they had appeared somewhere else in the game first.

As I'm sure you've noticed, the textures are also quite fat in terms of weight and actual size, so you will still likely have to do all the texture editing manually for doom, and pray the palette doesn't have its way with the textures.

Try AutoDoom or Thursday Night Survival

Shadows of the Empire textures would be nice too.

The game I've always wanted a set of texture rips from is the PSX's Spyro The Dragon. If you're in the know about how to rip textures from PSX Games, I'd be both impressed and somewhat desparate to learn.

Also I thought Perfect Dark was flippin' awesome, so a PD themed map set would be right down my alley!

I can try finding out for you if they can be ripped or not, however I'd imagine the universal texmod tool may be able to rip the textures from PC memory while running the emulator.

I tried it with Skulltag a few years ago and was less than impressed.  I haven't used skulltag since then.  I only use GZDoom anymore, and I haven't tried it on there.  I remember it being buggy as hell.

No source code = no proper source port

Unless the techies are willing to spend a few years reverse engineering the engine using the Build engine code, I don't think the source ports we need will ever come.

I think the next best thing to do is find an old dos capable possibly gaming laptop to play it on.

It's a bit pricey for youtubing, plus don't most YT players use headsets? You could probably find one for gaming for around $50 USD. Have a look in your local electronics store. That mic sounds more for hobbyist/semi professional work like film or radio.

First of all, in my opinion, it's never worth wasting money for "let's plays" (unless if you've already got a large fan base). I'd suggest buying a headset, too, though. That microphone will only pay off if you're a vocalist.

I guess I'll just have to get a headset then as you guys are saying, one LPer who told me about the Yeti mic said that headsets generally aren't that good to use for LPs but whatever.

Have any mates with spare time? Between my group of friends and brothers we always fork out money to host a reasonably good 30th night. Mine is not until a few more years though.

We don't do anything crazy, it's usually a killer feast with good drinks to boot. I hope you get do something special, it's uplifting.

If you are into drinking the strong stuff I suggest you also try out scotch. JW black label is a good one which isn't too expensive. Though if you are only into mixed drinks I suggest just sticking with Vodka and rum.

Personally I can't stand rum because it makes my stomach upset for some reason. I guess it's all the sweetness. Can't stand super sweet alcohols. Plus it makes the hangovers all the worse.

I almost got some Captain Morgan tonight... but I didn't, and instead caved to a larger bottle of Kraken rum. I think I'm hooked on that as far as rum goes.

Also got some tequilla, Irish cream, and picked up my bottle of Leopold Brothers absinthe that I left at my mom's house.

Cpt. Morgan does nothing for me. I heard so much about Kraken that I was almost disappointed when I finally got my mitts on it. As far as rum goes, I'll never pass a chance to get some Diplomático, yum!

Each nation sort of had its own independent culture for centuries or millenia now, depending on how old they are and what they went through, and some did so in relative isolation, so no, it's not about that. As for the Internet...IMO, its biggest failure has been precisely the failure to "level" all countries to the same level of Western Democracy (which, as Winston Churchill had said, despite its flaws, was "the best of possible worlds"). It wasn't able to eradicate superstition, skews and kinks caused by local politics. On the contrary, it took market, political and law systems by surprise, and it still keeps on doing that.

By surfing, one could initially think that we're living in some sort of globalized, Western-type democracy, with unified laws, unified politics, unified culture, unified economics etc. but that's far from the truth, and usually in quite unpleasant ways.

If you desperately want something new(ish) by me, then there is a revised electronic edition of my Torre Attack book. There's a Kindle version (with a free sample, including a description of what is new), but I recommend the Chess Studio edition. It's not really a book for casual players though.

Well it looks as if simply upgrading to the 970 won't be easy, after looking up a lot of threads on the same model of computer I bought (the Alienware Andromeda X51) there's not a lot of space for a new card such as the 970, it can be freed up by moving the fan but there's still the matter of the power supply needing to be replaced for a more capable one.

Could've gotten better for the same price had you built it yourself.

It was around $1000 which I thought was good enough for a refubished Alienware.
