    The DOOM Tribute Project

    Version

    1018 downloads

This is a re-interpretation of the original DOOM & DOOM II levels. It pretty much is a retelling of the DOOM story in a more up-to-date format. This wad contains 34 levels and it is an attempt to recreate the original DOOM maps while still keeping the classic DOOM experience. This wad includes cut-scenes (that are skipable), smooth DOOM weapon animations, a couple of new weapons including the railgun with sniper scope, and a second pistol you can pick up and go Lara Croft on some demon scum. For the most part, it's a tribute to DOOM. Jumping and Crouching may be required. Any addons will be available on www.zdoom.org within the DOOM Tribute thread under the Project portion of the ZDoom forums.

    SERENITY III aka INFINITY (v1.2)

Pros: Straightforward, lot of action, no button madness. Plays smooth. Classic Doom feeling. Cons: Lots of invisible lines blocking monsters. Lots of hitscanners and not enough health packs.

Episode 2, Levels 1 through 8. There's not really any situation.. We just decided we were going to make a brand new episode, I just hope it makes the next "Complete Doom Accessory CD Volume IV"! Levels are fun, rather smooth on 386s, and small. Levels: E2M 1,3,4,7,8 by Pith Possum, E2M2 and E2M6 are by Apocalypse, and E2M5 by his bro. Wyvern. *Hint* Get LSD.WAD, other episode by Pith Possum! * YOU ---MUST---- USE DOOM 1.666 or newer!!!! *

I still haven't completed it yet but it's really fun and inspiring in my opinion. Also most levels are very short but very well done. The fact that they are short makes this megawad smooth to play. If you don't have much time to play, you can complete 2 or 3 levels per day in just a handful of minutes which is neat. The last levels last longer and offer a really fun challenge to test your skills. Difficulty is fairly balanced, sometimes it escalates too quickly but you get used to it immediately. I recommend it to anyone who likes classic Doom 2.

    Beautiful Doom (version 6.2.0)

Phenomenal gameplay mod, keeping the original Doom gameplay intact with added smooth animations and little touches like better looking blood and sound effects that are great to the ears. There's even an added class to use enhanced guns, giving weapons secondary fires such as a kick for the Fists and homing rockets for the Rocket Launcher, though there's always the option to play with vanilla guns if you just want to play with the smooth animations of both the weapons and the enemies. Beautiful Doom makes the original Doom gameplay feel fresh and new as the animations offers great visual flair and the added enhanced guns class is great to go along with them.

Short, but very nice looking Ultimate Doom with smooth and constant action. Rather mild in difficulty level, but very playable nonetheless.

    Tainted Waters

For a first attempt, this map is pretty nice. Sure, you'll see the Doom 2-esque texturing, a bland brick maze, a layout that is not exactly smooth to navigate; but the map has a certain charm and in overall plays well, with gradual increase in action intensity. I liked it.

    RetributioN Trilogy

My very first mod project. I released the first map last year but has since been updated for Doom 2 and has had some kinks ironed out. WAD contains 2 HUGE 40+ minute maps and a boss map, built using only vanilla resources and have an emphasis on atmpshere and exploration. If you want, use dynamic lights and Smooth Doom (If on GzDoom) but they are optional. If you care, here is a selection of screenshots, which you can use in your Newstuff review if you want, each with a paragraph of backstory: http://imgur.com/gallery/uZndR

    A Walk In Hell

    Version

    34 downloads

Entry for the Vinesauce DOOM Mapping Contest. A short, hell-themed cave map. The DeHacked patch (HELLWALK.DEH) is required in order to complete the map. Note that the patch will not work if there are additional mods which modify the Baron of Hell's death animation and/or include new death animations (e.g. Smooth Doom). This map is vanilla-compatible.

    3 Heures d'agonie 3

At first you lull yourself into the simple but fun Doom 2 replica, play through a few maps, think the WAD is fun and then ANAL FUCK TO THE FACE HAPPENS! (just imagine how that must look). I think that maybe playing it on a difficulty level lower than UV would make the experience more smooth and less crushing as I can't recommend UV unless you like retrying a lot. I still have no idea how you're supposed to survive being suddenly surrounded by an army of arch-viles.

    Blofeld X

This pales in comparison with other works of this author, but in absolute terms it's still damn good. We can see the connected layouts that are trademark of this author, and smooth gameplay, but there's still lots to improve in visuals department. MAP06 is gimmicky, but in a good way and utilizes Doom features in ways that are not often seen to create an adventure style "tricks & traps" sort of map. The story unfolds in your imagination only - you're still the Doomguy, not James Bond.

    Aeon Deathmatch

It's really smooth, top high detailed. I just don't agree it provide some new game play or something. I mean yeah it provide but it will play pretty much same as old GW 1.:) Though for old limited doom deathmatch maps, this is pretty damn good wad. I don't care about the 3D Floors but i appreciate the maps are made good with feeling and really great sized, which is pretty good. The era when people made maps where you discovered everything on map in 1.5 minute is i hope gone. :)

    No Sleep for the Dead

Masterfully classic architecture with superb lighting, spot-on monster placement and smooth gameflow turns this into a must-play for anyone who likes vanilla-style maps. Van der Veken cleverly mixes in elements from ep.2 and 3 without losing the KDITD touch. Could have easily been part of the original release of the game. Skillfully executed, fun to play, making you demand more. Needless to say, you gotta download this if you want to check out one of the classic Doom highlights of 2016.

    Lunatic

since this came out, the moon look has been explored with more ornament and grandeur to it. (examples are Valiant by the same author and the single level Man on the Moon by Yugiboy85.) it's easy to write off Lunatic as slightly dated, with its sparkly clean CC4-tex look feeling like a design relic of the time. imo that would be a mistake. Lunatic has a great trick that the secret mysterious Doominati wants to charge you recurring payments of $19.99 for. throughout, there are a lot of cool, memorable "events" that I'd describe as cinematic. they are kind of like cutscenes, telling a ministory through motion and change, without of course stealing the controls away. their periodic appearances give Lunatic the vibe of a lived-in movie -- which, as an incidental bonus, meshes super snugly with the "action caper" pitch of the combat. "The Final Countdown" is basically a cinematic event from start to finish, along with being arguably the most iconic arena map ever and a preciously rare musical gimmick/pun map. I think it's telling that Valiant's "Rocket Zone 2" would have been highly recognizable as a remake of Lunatic's "Rocket Zone" even if it had a completely different theme and gave the architecture a substantial overhaul. the sense of identity transcends the things that most commonly produce identity. combine that with essentially the perfect musical fit -- the cheesy, synthy jams of '90s arcade games and of course...that other one -- and a great skybox and props. Lunatic's combat is defined by its unification of "challenge" and "fun" (not the way I classify things, but I've seen it often and it works here, so I'm rolling with it). basically, the parts where you plow down lots of fodder with powerful weapons -- in a way that might read as comic relief -- are also arranged to be the most dangerous fights, instead of serving as pure low-stress interludes. that danger comes from a wider range of powerful attacks (no surprise that both new monsters are zombies with hard-hitting non-hitscan attacks) and from the constant worry of the weakling mobs infiltrating your space. the result is a sort of hedging against either part not translating to a given player: if a fight is too easy to be exciting purely based on its threat-resolution arc or if it's frustratingly hard (not that the latter is likely in Lunatic), it can still redeem itself with raw components that are inherently satisfying. skillsaw is also dogmatic about placing the needed parts of your progression goals in convenient sight -- a key might be hoisted on an unreachable platform, reached from somewhere else, with the matching key door adjoined in the same room. that both makes it hard to get lost and gives the action an undercurrent of psychological momentum. it is a pageturner in Doom format, in a way. having a clear picture of what's next encourages you to see it through, to tie the loose ends you've been handed. nothing's wrong with intentionally cryptic maps that refuse easy progress, but provided one wants super smooth flow, wads like Lunatic make a great study for avoiding the occasional hitches that often surface in maps that are 95% of the way there. 9/10 or so. improved on (nominally) but still indispensable. /still not a reviewer. I don't do it often enough to count!

    Simple Pistol Starter

    Version

    25 downloads

This is a mod that automates the process of pistol starting in Doom and several other IWADs. It makes no other changes to gameplay in the IWADs or other mods that the included "pistol starters" are compatible with. Usage is simple: Load only one pistol starter, and load it after whatever WADs you want to use. Autosaves should be enabled, and the game should be played as in normal continuous play. The process of pistol starting will be performed for you automatically via ACS scripting. At the start of each level a script will run. It will remove from all players all weapons, armor, ammo, etc. and give them the default weapons and ammo and reset their health to 100. If autosaving is enabled the game will then save your progress as it would otherwise. You will be able to play the entire game with no need for cheats or further configuration. These pistol starters should only be used with IWADs, megawads and other mods that include multiple levels and are "pistol start friendly", such as Ancient Aliens, Sunlust or Valiant. For Freedoom use the pistol starters for Doom or Brutal Doom. Chex Quest 3, Hacx, and Heretic have been given pistol starters because of the similarity of their structure and gameplay to Doom. Other IWADs such as Hexen and Strife were not, due to their unsuitability for pistol starts. If any other mod or IWAD is hub-based or otherwise dependent on continuous gameplay, it may be "broken" by these scripts. If a WAD only includes one map these scripts would be pointless. If a WAD includes custom weapons it will not work as intended unless the pistol starter is compatible. Pistol starters for several mods have been included: Beautiful Doom v6.1.0.2 Brutal Doom v20b Elf Gets Pissed v1.1 PerK's Smoother Weapon Animations Enhanced Strange Aeons v5.4 Valiant The pistol starter for Brutal Doom v20b includes a patch for the error that prevents Brutal Doom from working with recent versions of GZDoom, which is the reason why this pistol starter is in ".pk3" format instead of ".wad". It will also "remember" whether the initial "crack knuckles and load rifle" and shotgun-pump animations have played and skip them in future maps as they would be skipped normally. As for the pistol starter for Elf Gets Pissed: It will remember whether or not the Lightbringer was found, and will give it back to the player on pistol start, along with the amount of ammo that would have been given on pickup. (120 on skills 0 and 4, 80 otherwise) For Strange Aeons: It will remember the Yithian Lightning Gun, giving it back after pistol start if it was found, along with the ammo given on pickup. (80 on skills 0 and 4, 40 otherwise) This is a list of the included pistol starters: (IWAD) Doom and Freedoom: pstlstrt.wad (Mod) Brutal Doom v20b: btlpstrt.pk3 (Mod) Beautiful Doom v6.1.0.2: bdpsstrt.wad (Mod) Elf Gets Pissed v1.1: egpsstrt.wad (IWAD) Heretic: evwdstrt.wad (IWAD) Hacx: hxpsstrt.wad (IWAD) Chex Quest 3: mzchstrt.wad (Mod) PerK's SWAE: pkpsstrt.wad (Mod) Strange Aeons: sassstrt.wad (Mod) Valiant: vlpsstrt.wad The pistol starter for Brutal Doom is compatible with Freedoom if used with Brutal Doom v20b. It is not intended for use with mods based on Brutal Doom, such as Project Brutality. (It may work correctly, it but probably won't.) The pistol starter for PerK's Smoother Weapon Animations Enhanced can be used with either the brown or black gloves editions, and is also fully compatible with Smooth Doom. The Valiant pistol starter is intended for use with skillsaw's "Valiant.wad" and "sawdust.wad". For Valiant: Vaccinated Edition use either the Doom pistol starter, or the one intended for whatever mod you want to use with it. The original ACS script source files have been left inside each pistol starter WAD, and are commented for reference. The source files could be used to make more pistol starters for other mods and IWADS.

    Return to Hadron

This WAD gets the essence of Doom very well. All maps are single player, open arenas where you can go absolutely anywhere but never feel lost. Gameplay flow is smooth and never gets dull. Adequate weapons are always provided when needed. Difficulty is well balanced and visuals are pleasing while keeping the simple design. This is a great addition to the archives.

    Beautiful Doom (version 6.1.0.2)

Not all it is claimed to be. Beautiful Doom in fact makes some noticeable changes to gameplay balance - purely visual upgrade this is not. On the visual side some of sprite replacements look really amateurish and bad, as do some of new effects. There are better SFX mods out there, that also don't touch gameplay in any way (stuff like Smooth Doom that can be combined with particle fire enhancer or some of loads of others compatible SFX mods)

    Random Deaths & Decoration v1.2

    Version

    30 downloads

After getting burnt out on Brutal Doom, I still wanted vanilla gameplay but I liked having alternate deaths for the monsters (and other things) so I put together this for my entertainment and yours. Nearly all monsters have multiple death sequences, dead things and gore are randomized and a couple other surprises. Smooth animations have been implemented for most monsters (but not death states) as well as a few other additions in 1.2. There are no weapon changes at all so if you want to load up your favorite weapons mod that doesn't alter monsters, make sure you load it up before it. There is now a separate version for Zandronum now, which should work 100% due to extensive online multiplayer testing.

    DTS-T

This is a VERY ambitious WAD - more levels than Doom itself, level/"chapter" titlecards, voice acting, and an overdrawn opening cutscene. While modern zDoom features are present, the dissonance between how the game presents itself and how it actually is is a joke. Corners "smoothed" with goofy, jaggy lines, misaligned textures, hitscanners galore with minimal health; and architecture straight from a late 90s WAD... just embarassing. 1/5

    Mapgame

This is an excellent replacement for Doom E1. The graphics are HQ, crisp, clear, and boasting great originality, but there's still some nostalgic hints here and there. I love the game play--smooth, straightforward, fun with some good fights (very classic style). This has to be one of the most imaginative E1 replacements I've played. Some replacements/remakes tend to just change a few things from the classic maps and that's it, nothing new. But this is totally fresh and creative. Great job! 5/5

    GAMBLER.WAD

    Version

So, you're still looking for WAD's after 2 years of DOOM ][, eh? If that's the case, then you are probably looking for quality, since you've no doubt had your fill of crappy ones. Do you like your textures aligned? You got it. Do you like consistent, smooth transitions between areas? You got it. Do you like fast-flowing DeathMatches that include all the weapons, very little health, just enough ammo, and a few tele-frags? You got it. Do you hate BFG overload, megaspheres, soul spheres, cheap spawn frags, etc? You got it, sort of... Lemme explain: With a cursory glance at this wad you will see 3 BFG's, 3 soul spheres, Combat Armor, etc. and you will think, "Geez, not another one of those!". BUT, this one is different. All of these items save one BFG are out of the players' reach until one guy gets desperate and wants to gamble. You see, when you go after the one accessible BFG, pedestals with the other goodies come down in different areas of the map. You are gambling, because you never know what your enemies are going to obtain, if anything! This system really works well to provide a balanced, and unpredictable match. In regard to telefrags, the main battleground of this WAD is an outdoor arena with three large structures, each with 1 passthru tunnel that acts as a teleport to the ledge that encircles the arena. The teleports are activated only after entering the tunnel, so if you enter and quickly hit reverse, you will teleport to a different part of the ledge than the guy that enters and passes straight through. The guy hoping for a tele-frag in this case has a 50/50 chance (greater if he is a keen observer with quick reflexes) of fragging his prey. Again, a gamble. Hope you decide to try it, it's a blast!

    ragnarok

This is dated May 2005. It's a simple retro level with a non-linear design; you alternate between a dungeon and a hell-themed section. The layout is very simple and the detailing is old-fashioned, with a couple of texture errors. The gameplay is pretty unchallenging too, but overall I enjoyed it. Despite the negative reviews above, I felt that the level recaptured the sense of wonder I felt when I played Doom for the first time; the smooth motion, the shading etc.

    BLUDBTH3.WAD

    Version

This level is designed to be a fast paced deathmatch level with a Doom ][ feel. The level is very smooth flowing. You'll find yourself covering all of the level. The weapon layout was well thought out, so that certain weapons are more desirable to obtain than others. For instance every one will know were you are when getting the Plasma. Since the Super Shotgun has become such a favorite weapon in deathmatch, that also has a slight degree of consequence, but is located so that every one will be going for it. Ammo and health were also major factors. I felt that the super health was just a little to much, so in the exit I put 60 health potions (don't you hate when your screen stays white for a while). And you'll only find the green armor. Loaded up you'll survive a rocket in the face with maybe 20% heatlth (where was that health again). The level has at least 50 hours 2 player deathmatch testing, so everything was debated, from sound (certain sound, certain area), lighting, warp in spots, starting points, weapon layout, health layout, and even graghics. So if your not satisfied with this level, you just don't know what deathmatch is! This level is best played with -altdeath and deathmatch 2.0. One hint is to keep the Super shotgun away from the other guy as much as possible. Also when exiting the plasma room launch a BFG, it'll at least even the score!
Don't listen to the trolls and ZDoom haters, this is a truly amazing piece of work. The animations are silky smooth, the weapons are finely balanced, and the overall experience feels like a completely different, and very good game. There is a learning curve because the reloads and other features mean that you can't just carry over all of your Doom techniques, but it's worth it. 5/5 --Woolie
